Environmental Monitoring

At one level you can do anything you like; what is important is to consider how these concentrations can be interpreted. You may need to think about:

  • The biological significance of the concentrations (what you measure may not be the same as what is important ecologically);
  • Measurements of concentrations that are so variable, temporally and spatially, that it is difficult to interpret the result;
  • The significance of load rather than the concentration alone;
  • The flux of the parameter rather than the instantaneous concentration.

If, after you have considered the alternative options, concentration is still the best choice, measure it.

How do I make sure the program is effective and efficient?
