The "best" method for any program is not the same as the "gold standard". You need to consider the relevance of the test to the question you are asking. What is best may need to take into account:

  • Variance in the test results and effect size of interest;
  • Cost;
  • Training of personnel;
  • Variance in other related tests which might limit interpretation of the results;
  • Potential for specific factors to interfere with the test in a particular case.


Paying more for a test which is not relevant to the particular situation is unnecessary and limits the resources available for other parts of the program. See Methods for additional information.
